About The Building Northeastern Minnesota Project
The communities and their economic development offices, as well as other
regional economic agencies are working diligently to bring new businesses
into the region. In some communities, these are totally new jobs,
yet in other communities the jobs created are to help replace jobs lost through
business closures or staff reductions. A good example of this is the loss of nearly
2,000 jobs in St. Louis County with the closure of taconite mining operations.
One thing missing was the ability for the new companies coming into the area to find
information on local businesses. This would make their transition into the area easier
while helping to promote local businesses.
In an attempt to increase the use of local businesses, Mr. David Hughes of CMS
Design Inc, a CAD (Computer Aided Drafting) firm envisioned the Building Northeastern
Minnesota Project. In May of 2003 he contacted Mr. Edward Addy of Northern Visual
Services, a computer programming and website design company. After
talking with members of the local and regional government and economic development
community, work began on the project in June of 2003. In July 2003, the Building
Northeastern Minnesota Project became fully operational.
The main task of this project is to provide company profiles promoting existing businesses,
and links to promote local Chambers of Commerce, communities and economic
development offices within the 7 county area to those new businesses and others
moving to or evaluating a potential move to northeastern Minnesota.
To make the project self-sustaining and cover the cost of website
development, maintenance, updates, database management, and customer
service, each participating business pays an annual fee. Links
to communities official websites, economic development offices and
Chambers of Commerce within the 7 county area are made available
through a free link exchange service located in the participation
section of the website.
The project's searchable local business profile database acts as a valuable resource
for local business information. It can assist:
New companies making the move to northeastern Minnesota.
New families moving into the seven county area.
Existing business to find the services of other local businesses.
